For as far back as I can remember, one activity has given me a sense of fulfillment and purpose: Creating art. Whether it be through sculpture, pen and ink illustration, editing and manipulating sound, or digital imagery, art has been the driving force of my entire life. I have struggled - knowing that it is not necessarily the most stable or financially rewarding field - but I am convinced that no matter what else is happening in my life (or around it), art will always be the foundation of my existence. I still have much to learn, but I welcome the experience, as long as I can continue to create in the process.
Presented here are selections from my history as a graphic designer. I have worked professionally as a designer on-and-off since the late 1990s, with various other types of work filling in the cracks between.
In my time, I have held positions as everything from a dishwasher at a health food restaurant, to a security guard on the stage of an NBC television series. I have worked as a supervisor at a large book store chain and for a company specialising in the dismanting of classic antique Dutch barns.
I have catered for film and television, and I have constructed large displays at Saks Fifth Avenue. I once even held the title of Art Director at a small Internet publishing firm.
Throughout this somewhat checkered and winding career path, I have honed my design skills by creating layouts for releases on the small independent record label which I own and operate. I have organised live events in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and all of these activities have included creating items such as tshirts, stickers, posters and handbills, as well as developing websites in order to promote them. I have created websites for other bands, labels, artists and individuals.
Graphic design has been a constant companion, the brightest star in the night sky, as I have navigated through my life. This site is still under construction. I have accrued such a large body of work over the years, that it has proven difficult to select a satisfying cross-section of material. More is coming.
From a very early age, I have found real pleasure in drawing, painting and sculpting. In recent years, these activities have fallen off in deference to computer-based art, but it is of course possible to combine these media to great effect.
